Preparing To Present Your Research Topic

When you present you will talk for 5 - 10mins. about your paper, explaining your topic and your findings. You need to describe some of your major resources, and tell about any interesting or unusual things you discovered. You will then need to explain what your argument is, and explain the primary pieces of evidence that you have that support your argument. You may use props to help you if you like (such as flip charts, diagrams on the whiteboard, a stereo to play music, etc.). Your job is to convince your classmates why your argument is correct. At the end there will be a question and answer session, where your classmates will ask you questions and you must do your best to answer them. Be sure to speak clearly, look up, and don’t panic if you forget something. Take your time. Be creative. Feel free to use all the resources available to you in the classroom. You may bring in posterboard or objects or do demonstrations to enhance your presentation.

To begin to prepare for your presentation, first make some notes to address the following questions:

1. What is my argument?

2. What are my strongest pieces of evidence that I should present?

    a.

    b,

    c,

3. Are there any props I could use that would help me make my presentation? What are they?

Once you have answered these questions, get together with a partner. Chose someone to go first. Explain to the other person what your argument is, and tell him or her what you’ve found out so far and what your best pieces of evidence are. When it is your turn to listen, write down at least three questions that you would want to know more about when it comes time for them to give their presentation -- things you think they might want address, or things you are curious about. Then let them try to answer. After both people have had a chance to go, discuss.
